How to Change the Pressure Switch on Your Gas Furnace

Your gas furnace is not working and you think that the pressure switch is bad. Here are some things to check and the steps to replace it. Replacing is not very difficult at all, in fact it is one of the easiest thing that you can replace yourself.

Your gas furnace purge blower runs and never shuts off but your furnace is not producing any heat. Or your igniter will glow, light the burners and then the furnace will shut right back down and try to recycle all over again. Either one of these conditions are common if the switch is going bad or has failed.

You can check the switch by placing a jumper wire across the wires going to the switch once the purge blower has started. If the burner lights and stays lit the pressure switch is probably your problem. Could be a weak blower, but I would try the pressure switch first; it is much less expensive to replace.

Once you isolate that this switch is faulty, then you can change it. This is very simple. For most furnaces the wiring is low voltage, so the risk of shock is minimal. You should still turn off the power to be safe. Remove the screws that secure the switch and then just switch the two wires over to the new switch and secure the screws again.

Turn the power back on to the furnace. Re-fire the furnace and check the operation of the unit. It takes a while for the unit to cycle through the lighting process but you should have a furnace that now heats your house just fine.

Air Compressors Need Clean Air Too!

The air we breathe everyday is full of contamination. It has water vapor and airborne particulates that we inhale into our lungs. The vast majority is not harmful and we barely notice that its even there. However, to your air compressor these harmless contaminants can become quite harmful due to the compression process.

Overtime they begin to erode your components, valves and be passed on to your air tools. Lets look at water condensation. Water vapor is a normal part of the air we breathe, especially if you live in a humid climate. It is harmless at normal atmospheric pressures. However when the pressure is raised in the compression process, hot air is pushed through hoses and fittings and when it contacts the cooler air condensation forms.

Water can be very damaging to your air compressor and air tools over time and removing it is a priority. Water  is not the only liquid that can damage your system. Even, lubrication can cause damage if excessive amounts are in your air system. Older air compressors especially have this problem. As they get older and parts begin to wear out, lubricating oils leak into the compressed air can damage the unit. Don’t forget solids too. Rust, dirt and metal are all present and will attack your compressed air system. The results of air contamination are reduced efficiency and increased maintenance costs on both your air compressor and air tools. There are several ways to attack these problems and protect your air compressor.

Aftercoolers

Aftercoolers will cool the air temperature as it is discharged from the compressor. As a general rule for every 20 degrees F cooled, approximately half of the moisture is condensed. Aftercoolers bring discharge air temperature  down from 200 – 400 degrees F to within 20 -50 degrees  of the ambient air temperature. This process will cause  most of the moisture to condense into a liquid state. Then the water can be removed from the system before it can cause any damage. An aftercooler can generally remove around 60% of the moisture from the air.

Dryers

Dryers also remove moisture from the air compressor system by reducing temperature. Dryers generally remove around 30% of the moisture. This is in addition to the 60% the aftercooler removed. This is why you commonly see an aftercooler and a dryer both hooked up to an air compressor to produce the driest air possible.

Coalescing Filters

Now that you are removing most of the water vapor from your air compressor using a aftercooler/dryer combination, that still leaves solid particulates in your system. These are commonly rust, metal and dirt. Lets face it, an auto shop is not the cleanest environment! Filters can be added to your shop air compressor to remove these particles. Filters do not condense water vapor and are only useful for solid particles. They are not a replacement for an aftercooler or dryer.

In order to get the cleanest air possible from your air compressor, I would recommend using all three options on your shop air system. They will pay for themselves in a longer life for your air compressor, better performance and efficiency for your air tools and longer air tool life.

Electric Air Compressors and How They Work

This is powered by an electric motor which is activated when the unit is turned on. When the motor is engaged, the air compressor pump turns and compresses air which is then stored in a tank.

The motor on an electric air compressor is specifically designed for this use as it has a high torque capacity. This is required to allow the unit to pump at start up. The box that is located on top of the motor houses capacitors which assist the motor during the start up process. The capacitors continue to work the entire time the machine is running. If these capacitors fail, the motor will stop working properly and eventually will fail.

An electric air compressor also features a non return valve which allows air to flow in only one direction, into the tank. This stops the air from pressurizing back into the tank. This is of importance when the cycle begins again and whenever the electric motor cuts on. Thanks to this addition to the design of compressors, the motor’s initial start up is not hindered by back pressure. Many motors fail as a result of a faulty non return unit in a compressor as this places additional stress on the motor and capacitors when the unit is started up.

Other important parts of this style of compressor include an electric pressure switch commonly found on portable compressors. This switch is operated by tank pressure and connects the main current to the motor. A preset level is built into the machine and, when the unit reaches this level, the switch is activated mechanically. Upon activation, the compressor connect the current to the motor. Compressed air is then pumped until the desired pressure is reached. Once this target has been reached, the switch activates again and the current is disconnected from the motor. The compressor then shuts off.

The pressure release tube is a long thin pipe or tube which connects the non return valve and the pressure switch. Often you will hear this part release a small amount of air when the motor cuts off and the pump stops running. This is a normal feature of operation as it help to depressurize the pump. This results in less drag on the motor during start up so it is an integral part of the machine. Portable Air Compressor Life

 Life as a portable air compressor is probably more exciting than most people actually realize. I don’t just sit around waiting for exciting things to happen either. I am one of the lucky ones. I have an owner who uses me a lot so I don’t have much down time. I like that. Keeps me feeling needed and special. We’ve had a lot of experiences together too. Yep, excitement, that’s my game. Each day starts out with an exhilarating jolt as my motor vrooms to life, a refreshing surge of cool air fills my veins as the air rushes into my air hose. But what I really like is a shot of fresh oil to keep things moving smoothly. It’s a simple life, but one I wouldn’t trade for the world.

I happen to be just a small portable air compressor. I live with a nice man named John who owns a small construction business. He takes me with him wherever he goes. Usually, we visit job sites where John goes up to other men and talks to them about important stuff. I just hang out in the truck waiting patiently. Sometimes, John will come back to the truck and take me out to start working. These are the good days. Other times, we have to drive off and come back another day.

One time we were working together on a small project that John had lined up for us. I was all powered up and fully charged with air pressure like normal. Everything seemed just fine. I heard the buzz of electric saws and saw the normal saw dust flying around. Then, all of a sudden, and without any warning, my breath was taken away from me in a gush! I thought I was going to die. John had accidentally set his circular saw down on my hose and cut into it. It alarmed me at first, but before long John had me all fixed up and back to work we went. Ah, such is the life of a portable air compressor.

A few years ago I got a letter from my cousin back in Florida. He is a portable air compressor too. He works with a roofing company contractor. I could never do that sort of work because I am too big. Luckily, my cousin is just the right size and can be used up on the roof. I guess the workers just take him right on up and secure him to their roofing jacks. This seems dangerous to me, but different strokes for different folks.

A portable air compressor comes in many shapes and sizes. We are only truly portable if we don’t get too big. As long as we can be moved around easily and used where needed then we are considered truly portable. Once we get too big, then we are relegated to shop work and other stationary jobs. I pity these poor fools. It would be boring to just sit in one shop all day. I like getting out and seeing different places and meeting different people. I think it keeps me young.
